After-hours answering
After-hours answering is handling calls outside your business hours so callers reach an answer instead of voicemail.
After-hours answering explained
What counts as after hours
Nights, weekends and holidays, and also the gaps in the working day: lunch, a job site, a closed office. For many trades, most emergencies land in exactly those hours.
Two ways to set it up
Forward every call after a set time, or use conditional forwarding all day so your phone rings first and only the calls you can't take move on. Many owners use both: everything after 6pm, and busy or no-answer during the day.
Urgent versus routine
The point of an after-hours service is not only to take a message. It is to know which calls can't wait, such as no heat, a burst pipe or a trapped car, and to get those to a person fast. Ask any provider how it decides, and who sets the rules.
