We make Wenly. Here's how we compared, and where competitors beat us.
What matters for after-hours teams
For Wenly’s forwarding and on-call setup, use the after-hours answering service guide. After-hours coverage is only useful if the handoff survives an off-duty phone. Compare schedules, time zones, emergency escalation and honest callback expectations. A human desk may be worth more than a cheaper automated message when dispatch cannot wait.

- Urgent overnight fault: route according to the actual on-call rota.
- Routine quote at night: capture it for the next business window.
- Existing job issue: record context without promising an off-duty technician.
Confirm the caller's location, requested service, callback and whether the issue matches your written escalation rules. Configure weekends and holidays explicitly. The answering service's availability is not the same as your team's availability.
S, A and B tiers: why each option belongs
S means a strong starting shortlist for the requirements above, not the best voice in an unperformed test. A means a credible alternative whose billing unit or operating model needs a closer look. B means a conditional fit or insufficient public evidence. A quote-first provider can be excellent; lack of verified information is not evidence of poor service. The order within each tier is editorial, not a numerical score. Wenly is in A because its owner-callback workflow is useful but does not replace a staffed desk or a complete dispatch system.
S tier: start here for this workflow
- AnswerConnect: Consider for a staffed after-hours desk and appointment intake rather than an automated-only experience.
- AnswerForce: A strong field-service shortlist because the vendor lists the three trade platforms buyers often need to connect.
A tier: strong alternatives with trade-offs
- Wenly: predictable base price and fast lead email. A fit for an owner who returns calls; not a live dispatch desk or a native field-service integration.
- Smith.ai: A strong hybrid shortlist when a caller must be able to reach a person; its published entry tier also suits a very small call count.
- Ruby: Shortlist for callers who need a live conversation, particularly sensitive, unusual or relationship-led enquiries.
- PATLive: Useful for occasional calls requiring a person; the entry subscription keeps the standing fee low.
- Goodcall: Worth shortlisting for long conversations or repeat callers because usage is counted by distinct phone numbers, not minutes.
- Rosie: A credible low-cost bilingual option, with more included entry minutes than Wenly Solo.
- Upfirst: A lower paid entry price than Wenly for a small number of calls, with scheduling and transfer features advertised.
B tier: conditional or quote-first options
- Dialzara: Worth considering for self-managed intake and Zapier or Make workflows; Pro advertises warm transfers and connected calendars.
- My AI Front Desk (Frontdesk): An alternative when a wider front-office bundle matters more than just answering and delivering a lead email.
Price and feature comparison
Monthly USD prices, checked 2026-11-03. These are starting tiers, not equivalent bundles or an all-in quote. Taxes, setup, add-ons and transferred-call charges may apply. A feature on a higher tier is not included at the entry price unless stated. Not verified means we could not establish it from the linked vendor pages, not that the feature is absent. Ask for a written answer before buying.

Define the job
Write down overnight hours, recipients and the authority each person has.
Test the difficult case
Give every vendor the same urgent and routine call scenarios.
Verify the handoff
Test an unanswered on-call phone and a loop-free fallback.
Make a reversible choice
Review the received record and what the caller was told.
- YesTest the accepted handoff
- Check the schedule and configured transfer, then verify what counts as acceptance.
- NoSet a callback expectation
- Capture the request and give the approved next step without implying a crew is coming.
Rehearse the night the first phone is off
Run the test from a separate caller phone after the schedule boundary, then let the first on-call destination remain unanswered. Check that the fallback is a different reachable route and that it cannot forward back into the same answering line.
Read the received message without listening to the call. It should identify the caller, place, reported urgency and action still needed. If the night team cannot decide who owns the next step, fix that rule before comparing another voice or subscription.
- AnswerConnect: We could not verify a public US entry price. Obtain a written allowance, overflow rate and cancellation terms before comparing totals. Check the vendor's own page (opens in a new tab).
- AnswerForce: A logo is not proof of two-way job dispatch. Ask to see creation, updates and failure handling inside your own platform. Check the vendor's own page (opens in a new tab).
- Smith.ai: Compare the separate human-first offer and the quoted escalation charges. A per-call allowance cannot be compared directly with minutes. Check the vendor's own page (opens in a new tab).
- Ruby: The entry allowance is small. Ask how long intake and transfers are billed, and price a busy month rather than the minimum subscription. Check the vendor's own page (opens in a new tab).
- PATLive: The low standing fee buys no talk time. Human answering can cost substantially more once callers begin explaining a job. Check the vendor's own page (opens in a new tab).
- Goodcall: Unlimited minutes does not mean unlimited customers. Confirm exclusions and the cost of the external tools your workflow needs. Check the vendor's own page (opens in a new tab).
- Rosie: Do not assume the entry tier includes the transfer and direct-booking features shown on the higher Scale plan. Check the vendor's own page (opens in a new tab).
- Upfirst: Thirty calls is a different allowance from a minute bundle. Confirm billable-call definitions and test the particular language you need. Check the vendor's own page (opens in a new tab).
- Dialzara: Lite is not the same bundle as Pro. Compare the smaller entry allowance, paid extra minutes and the tier needed for bilingual answering, warm transfer or calendar sync. Check the vendor's own page (opens in a new tab).
- My AI Front Desk (Frontdesk): Compare the shared credit rules, auto-reload and what a voice minute consumes. Bundled channels are not all equivalent to telephone capacity. Check the vendor's own page (opens in a new tab).

If callers insist on talking to a person, a human-first provider is the better category, even when its monthly cost is higher. If your service manager needs a job created in ServiceTitan, Jobber or Housecall Pro, demand a demonstration of that exact integration. AnswerForce lists those systems; Wenly does not promise native support. Goodcall's lack of minute metering can suit longer calls, but its unique-customer allowance still matters. Upfirst's paid entry price and Smith.ai's free tier are lower than Wenly's entry price. Rosie includes more minutes and Spanish at its entry tier. Those are meaningful advantages, not footnotes.
The handoff must work, not just the greeting
Do not promise a 24/7 crew just because the phone is answered 24/7. If no one accepts a transfer, say what will happen next. Use a separate fallback with voicemail and no forwarding loop.
Write down three destinations: the usual lead recipient, the on-call transfer phone, and a fallback that remains reachable when the answering service fails. The fallback must be a different phone that does not forward back to the business line or answering number. Test an unavailable team member, a caller who declines a transfer, and a routine message outside the service area. Never describe a transfer attempt as a confirmed dispatch. If nobody accepts, the caller needs an honest next step rather than an invented arrival time.
What to ask before buying
Ask whether the service supports the rota you actually run and what time zone applies. Test a holiday, a schedule boundary and an unanswered destination. Confirm the message recipient can act rather than simply receiving another notification.
- Ask for the total bill at your ordinary volume and at twice that volume. Include repeat callers, spam exclusions, transfer time and required add-ons; do not compare only the entry price.
- Give every shortlisted provider the same synthetic scenarios. Include an interruption, a corrected address, an unfamiliar service and a caller who changes language. Do not share a real customer's recording without permission.
- Ask which systems are connected today, on the quoted tier. A Zapier connection, an email and a native two-way booking integration are different deliverables; verify the record actually reaches your system.
- Confirm who receives an urgent lead, when they are on duty and what happens if they do not answer. Check recording consent, retention, access controls and how you export your records if you leave.
- Agree the acceptance criteria before forwarding the main line. Use conditional forwarding first, test from another phone, and keep the previous route documented so the change can be reversed.
Worked missed-call cost example
Illustrative inputs: 3 missed overnight enquiries weekly, a $400 average job and a 20% close rate yield $240 weekly, $1,040 monthly and $12,480 yearly revenue at risk. This is a selected scenario, not research about overnight callers.
This is an illustrative scenario, not an industry average, a measured loss or a revenue promise. Missed calls can be repeat customers, vendors or spam; some callers would return anyway. Revenue is not profit, and answering a phone does not promise a booking. Use the missed-call cost calculator with your own missed calls per week, average job value and estimated close rate. Review actual booked jobs after setup before deciding whether the service has paid for itself.
Wenly's price, trial and current limits
Solo is $29/month for 150 minutes; Starter is $99/month for 500 minutes; Managed is $249/month for 1,200 minutes. Custom starts from $449/month by quote. Founding has Managed features at $149/month for life for the first 10 businesses, with 1,000 minutes, monthly only; ask about current availability. Prices and limits come from our plan configuration and pricing. Seven-day trial, activated by our team once your line is ready (100 minutes, no card). Then pay monthly by card through our secure checkout. Cancel anytime.
Wenly answers automatically in your business's name and emails a summary, transcript and recording link after the call, aiming for about 30 seconds. That is a delivery goal, not a competitor benchmark or a promise for every message. Managed and Founding add a person checking the lead after delivery, not a person answering the phone. Starter adds calendar booking when connected. Text alerts, in-call texts and social messaging are coming soon. There is no promise of an emergency crew, an unsupported booking or a native field-service integration. Test the business-specific demo against the handoff you actually need.
Methodology and evidence limits
Compared using public pricing pages and documentation, checked 2026-11-03. We did not make comparative test calls to these vendors, measure their response times or verify their marketing outcomes. The shortlist includes automated, hybrid and live-human services so buyers can see the category trade-offs. We prioritized a usable handoff, transparent billing units, around-the-clock availability and documented features. No affiliate ranking, customer quote, review score or invented market statistic is used. Provider descriptions are a dated snapshot; ask each vendor to confirm plan-specific availability.
For the matching workflow, read our after-hours teams answering service guide. Continue with best call answering for plumbers and best call answering for small business. Our Wenly versus rosie and Wenly versus answering service pages cover narrower differences. Ask for a demo and a written quote, then choose the provider that passes your own acceptance checklist.
